Susan Sarandon Bio
It was just after the 1968 Democratic convention and there was a casting notice for a film that had several roles for the kind of young people who had disrupted the convention. Joe (1970) was auditioned in New York by two recent Catholic University graduates. Chris Sarandon was not selected for the role, despite having previously studied acting. His wife Susan was offered a role in the film as Susan Compton. She is the daughter of Bill Compton (Dennis Patrick). In the film Dad Bill kills Susan's drug dealer friend and then befriends Joe (Peter Boyle)-- the bigot who is working on an assembly line , and who has a collection of guns.Five years later, Sarandon made the film which cult classic fans are familiar with her as Janet who is involved with transvestite Dr. Frank n Furter in The The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). After more than 15 years, Sarandon was finally able to actively advocate for Annie in Bull Durham (1988), flying herself between Rome to Los Angeles at her expense. She stated "It was an incredible script... it dispelled a lot of myths and challenged the American definition of what success is". "I went to the studio together with Kevin Costner and shook hands with his sexy assistants before getting back on the plane. Tim Robbins, her Bull Durham (1988) actor, a supporting actor was her first love. He was father to two boys by 1992. This placed Sarandon in an awkward position. She left her home to perform characters that were extremely difficult. This led to four Academy Award nominations in the 1990s and for the best actress in Dead Man Walking (1995). Her first Academy Award nomination was for Louis Malle's Atlantic City (1980).
